Cold Snap: Day 14

Seventh day in a row that the official temperature at the airport has not risen above -35. I have heard the last time that happened was 1989.

Changes I have had to make:

1) Dug out the bunny boots. Haven't worn them for 4 or 5 years.

2) Wore long johns for the first time in 8 or 9 years.

3) Had to blow dry my hair a couple times. Can't go from the shower to the car without the windows fogging icing up due to wet hair.

4) Nudged the thermostat up to 69 once or twice. I'm usually the one nudging it down to 65, the wife is the one nudging it up to 67.

Predictions of -20 by Monday. Woo hooo.

Games at my place tonight. Woo hooo.

Just curious, how much does it cost to heat your house when it is -40 outside? What kind of heater do you have, anyway?

I have a forced air furnace, which runs on home heating oil (diesel fuel) . Just had a new one installed this fall. It is much more efficient than the last. The last one used… maybe two to three gallons of fuel every day, on average, during the winter. (I define winter as November through April, six months). Fuel usage also varies by the amount of snow acting as insulation on my roof.

I get fuel delivered every month, I'm curious to see how many gallons it will take to top off the tank. I’d guess three gallons a day during the cold snap, as a pessimistic number.
